Norton Internet Security & SQL Server

Hi,

Just installed Norton Internet Security on an XP workstation that also has
SQL Server on it.

I now find that I cannot access SQL Server and multiple messages are being
issued by NIS.

When I switch off the Firewall & Intrusion Detection I can access SQL
Server.

Does anyone know how to configure NIS so that I can use it alongside SQL
Server?

Thanks,

Hi, try this:

permit UDP OUT and IN protocol for

SQL Server Service Manager (sqlmangr.exe)
SQL Server Windows NT (sqlserver.exe)

And TCP OUT and IN protocol for

SQL Tracing Tool (profiler.exe)
ISQL (isqlw.exe)

from any adress:any port and this should work, and then try fit your rules
to be more security

Noobest question

Hi everyone

i know sql well yet i'm the noobest u can find in terms like DataWarehouse...

I just installed sql server 2005

got a database with 1 big table in it.

i was asked to "Build a data warehouse table based on existing table(s)..."

this setence has a sense to it ?

what the hell is a data warehouse table ... ?

i checked lots of sites and docs about data warehouse and feel kinda lost of all the info regarding stuff like "analysis service" "integration tools" "bi studio.." "reporting service" ....

where should i start in order to create this "data warehouse table" (no redundancy) i was asked to ?

Your help(+patience...) would be most appreciated - :-) thx .

That's a ridiculously vague thing to ask for. Who on earth gave you that requirement?

Its possible they were talking about a denormalised table. Some people might call this a pivoted table. Go and check those things out.

I doubt that "analysis service" "integration tools" "bi studio.." "reporting service" are relevant to you at this point.

-Jamie

|||If you are looking for infomation (basic to advanced) and documentation on the newest terms you are worrying, then refer to the books online that willbe installed alongwith your SQLServer tools. Make sure you are using latest version of books online in this case, for the latest one refer to http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechnol/sql/2005/downloads/books.mspx link.

Noob: SQLEXPRESS_ADV Full-Text Disabled

Some background:
I initially installed SQLEXPRESS (without advanced services) as my default
instance. I read that Full-Text was not supported in that version, so I
disabled the Service, and downloaded and installed Advanced as a named
instance.
The "Use full-text indexing" checkbox on the Files tab of the Database
Properties dialog is disabled.
Attempting to create a new database is no different, the same disabled
checkbox on the Files tab.
Attempting to use SQL results in the error:
CREATE FULLTEXT CATALOG catFullText
Msg 7609, Level 17, State 100, Line 1
Full-Text Search is not installed, or a full-text component cannot be
loaded.
Any ideas? Should I completely uninstall everything and start over
correctly?

Hi Todd, can you check to see if the MSFETSQL is installed and running?
Check it from a command prompt by typing net start and look for something
like this
SQL Server FullText Search (SQLEXPRESS)
Where SQLExpress is the name of your SQL Express instance.

None of the Management Tools Installed...

I got SQL Server 2005 CTP (developer edition) as part of Visula Studio 2005 Beta Package. I removed all previous SQL server and Visual Studio stuff including all .NET framework versions completly. Then I installed SQL Server 2005 CTP first and selected all options (including all tools). I did not see any management tools (sql management studio or any other studio). I see all these cool services SQL Server, DTS, Reporting, Analysis etc., but no IDE to interact with what I can do with those services. Then I installed Visual Studio 2005 and it failed SQL Server Express which I do not want any way because I already installed SQL Server 2005. I am able to connect to SQL Server 2005 from Visual Studio, but lack of using real management tools makes all other services useless in SQL Server 2005. I tried to select those tools from advanced installation feature of SQL Server 2005 again and again... it gives error that I have not changed any installation changes and it can not install any tools. This is a mess. Can somebody explain what's going on here please... I greatly appreciate any help to make these tools appear.

Thanks
- KiranHi,
I had the same issue. Be sure that no express components are installed on your system. then uninstall sql server and reinstall it again. afterwards you should see the management tools. if you do not you should file a bug on product feedbakcenter about it.|||Thanks Ralph. As I mentioned, before installing SQL Server 2005, I removed everything related to either SQL Express components or VS or .NET I see in Add/Remove Software. Didn't work.|||In the setup directory on the installation CD there are several .MSI files.
I run SqlRun_Tools.msi and got the Mgmnt tools +

Non default port

I am using SQL 2005 and have multiple instances installed on multiple
servers. None are on the default port. When I connect to box 01
without specifying the port in the connection string, it connects.
But on box 02, it will only connect to the instance if I specify the
port name. Is this because it will only connect to the default
instance without specifying a port? or is there something else I need
to have setup on box 02 to make this work?
thanks in advance

Check to ensure the SQL Browser service is running as Tibor suggested.
Another possible cause is that UDP port 1434 is blocked.
When you connect to the default instance, TCP port 1433 is used by default.
When you connect to a named instance without a specifying a port, the client
requests a list of the named instances and corresponding ports via UDP port
1434 (this is the SQL Browser service). The client then determines the
named instance port.
Hope this helps.

Thanks again. I have made progress and found that the boxes that are
not working have many client aliases created on them, some of which
appear to be invalid. When I deleted the aliases that did not exist
on the server that is working, it fixed them. So now that I know how
to fix it, I am curious to know how these bad aliases got created
since we did not create them manually.

Did you install Visio? For example Visio installation process create for me
some alias. I have to delete it manually.

We can only explain how things work:
When you connect to a default instance (no backslash and instance name), the data access components
will connect to port 1433. The SQL Server service by default listens to 1433 for a default instance
(well-known port).
The port number for a named instance is determined dynamically the first time you start the
instance. SQL Server asks Windows for an available port, uses it and stores the port number in the
registry (as you can see using SQL Server Configuration Manager). It will try to use the same port
number on subsequent start-ups.
If you from the client app only specify machine name/IP backslash instancename, then you need some
component to translate this instance name to a port number. That component is SQL Server Browser
service. The client data access components connects to the SSB service using port 1434 UDP and
passes the instance name, and the SSB service returns the port number. You can also from the client
app specify machine/IP comma portnumber, so there would now be no use for the SSB service. SQL
Server 2000 didn't come with an SSB service so for 2000 the database engine did this job (listening
on port 1434).

to fix it, I am curious to know how these bad aliases got created
since we did not create them manually.|||"Victag" wrote:

Node missing component

for some reason the SQL Reporting service didnt get installed on one of my
nodes... so i was simply just going to install it... apparently it isnt so
simple.
how do i go about adding the reporting services to a node?
Thanks
Justin
SQL Reporting Service is not cluster aware. You can install it by running
SQL setup CD and select the Reporting Service option.

|||For SQL 2000, it is a separate CD and install. For SQL 2005, go to
add/remove programs and change SQL 2005. Add the Reporting SErvices
component when you get the features list.

no template to create a dtsx project in BIDS

i have sql server 2005 dev and bids installed. i want to create a dtsx package, but when i go to File>new>project the template to create an interogation services package is not there. the template for Olap projects is missing also. it used to be present before i upgraded my system to Vista. Could this be a vista issue or do i just need to install a patch or something simple like that?

Hi,

Maybe, you should check that you have installed the Software Development Kit, not just the BIDS from the client components.

Janos

|||Have you tried reinstalling?|||i have. when i click on the help menu and "about visual studio" where it shows all components that are installed. the integration components are there.|||

Have you got files like BusinessIntelligenceProjects.vsdir and DataTransformationsProject.vsz in C:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 8\Common7\IDE\PrivateAssemblies\Business Intelligence Projects

I don't really know how the IDE packages are enumerated and loaded, but that may be a start. Vista itself is not an issue, but I only use fresh installs not upgrades, but I'm sure somebody must have done this successfully.

Probably the simplest thing to do is run setup and repair the install, and failing that just remove and reinstall SQL.

|||yes. that directory you mention exists, as do the .vsz and vsdir files. my installataion of vista was fresh, from the ground up, not an upgrade.|||

Below is the link I used to add the BI projects into BIDS. I hope it helps solve your issue as well.

i tried this, and although it didnt help my suituation, i found that when i click on Projects, in the "what settings to import" menu, the only projects there are Vb Defaults and VSC++ Project settings. could it be that my settings file is incorrect. could someone export and send me on a settings file , where they can create all BIDS projects? I would like to try to import that.

|||got a settings file off a workmate who can access all BIDS templates. Imported it but no luck. Reinstalled all SQL SServer client side tools but still not working. this is rediclious. Thinking I might just go back to win XP and to h*ll wth Vista, unless anyone else has any more solutions

No Summary page in Management Studio

I have installed SQL Server 2005 sp2. Initialy I didn't install Report Services and Analysis Services. I next installed them using change in Add Remove Programs and still no Summary page. HELP!

I have looked for a solution to this longer than any other software search I have done to no avail.

Try to click F7 on SSMS and if no avail then try to install client tools again.|||

I uninstalled and reinstalled everything and it didn't make any difference.

Still no summary page.

I would love to have it available as it is a development server and the reports on summary page would be very usefull especially.

It works great on our other production servers. This server has the latest service packs on windows server 2003 and SQL Server 2005. SP2 is the latest also not the original one reissued 3/5.

|||

in sp2 the summary page has been renamed... it now Object Explorer Details (i don't have sp2 in my home machine... i am not remembering it exactly... ) .. You click on "View " in Top Menu bar and see the option available there

In SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2, we've renamed the "Summary Page" to "Object Explorer Details". The reports no longer display in this page. They are now launched from the object in Object Explorer and open in their own report window. This allows you to open multiple reports at the same time. Thus, you can compare reports on different instances or the same report multiple times to see what has changed over time.

I gave a webcast on SP2 improvements in this area a little while ago. You should check it out:

No Suitable Driver

Hi

I installed the free software MS SQL Server 2000 from microsoft.com.
I installed the JDBC driver from the following microsoft link
http://msdn.microsoft.com/downloads/default.asp?URL=/downloads/sample.asp?url=/MSDN-FILES/027/001/779/msdncompositedoc.xml

I set the classpath to point to the jar files in the lib folder in the driver I downloaded.

I wrote the following test file to test the connectivity import java.io.*;
import java.sql.*;

public class Test
{

public static final String DB_URL = "jdbc:JDataConnect://localhost/testdb";
public static final String DB_USERNAME = "";
public static final String DB_PASSWORD = "";
public static final String DB_DRIVER = "com.microsoft.jdbc.base.BaseDriver";

public static void main(String args[])
{

ResultSet rs = null;
try
{
Class.forName (DB_DRIVER);
Connection conn=DriverManager.getConnection(DB_URL, DB_USERNAME, DB_PASSWORD);

System.out.println("Connection established");
}
catch(Exception e)
{
System.out.println("An exception has occurred" +e);
}
}
}

when I run this code using java Test after successful compilation I get the following error

An exception has occurredjava.sql.SQLException: No suitable driver

Please Help !!!!

Thanks in Advance

PlumTry this

import java.io.*;
import java.sql.*;

No sqlclient database, how to run script to create?

After installed SQL Server 2005 with Management Studio, I found that there i
s
no any local server. So when the studio opened, no any server connection and
no any sqlclient database in local machine. May I run some script to create
the local server and sqlclient databse, if yes, where is the script, and how
to run? Else, have to re-install SQL Server 2005, and what install option is
missed?
Thanks.Hello,
Just go to SQL Server setup program and choose Database Services and
continue the install.
Before doing this go see the SQL server and see the DATA and LOG folder is
created. If yes open the latest Errorlog file from Log folder and
see Server name and try registering using that in management studio.
Thanks
