Norton Antivirus / SQL Server

I have a Windows 2003 Server STD box with SQL Server 2000 STD on it. I want
to install Norton Antivirus Corporate. Are there any Norton/SQL issues that I
need to be aware of? (ie. folders to exclude, performance issues).Exclude all SQL data, log, and backup file folders. Limit access to these
folders as much as possible through NTFS permissions. Do not use any AV
product from any vendor on a clustered SQL Server.

Norton anti virus on Sql server

As part of the Security Initiative, Our security team wants to put
Anti-Virus protection on All Sql server database.
Is it good a practice to Install Anti Virus software on Sql servers?
Has anybody installed it on their production system? Any issues with it?
I appreciate your answer.
James,
[vbcol=seagreen]
I certainly would. No compromise, even when the server is not connected to
internet.
[vbcol=seagreen]
Exclude the SQLServer files - mdf,ndf and ldf etc from being scanned. Also,
whenever you are doing any setup from a recognised media, make sure to stop
the AV service and turn it back on when you are done.

Noob here, dumb, but quick question

Ok, I know a LITTLE about SQL 2000. I am just starting to get my feet wet in the area. I know how to install SQL, backup DB's and Restore them. Can even do them over the network now. YAY ME! Anyway, here is my question. I have a production server with 4 RAID arrays. I have one for my OS, one for the Main SQL DB's (heavy transaction DB's), one for my log files, and one that is supposed to be for my temp DB. Well when I installed SQL it asked me for the default data path, which would be where my main SQL db's go. I dont remember it asking me where I want the temp DB to go. How do I change the location of the tempdb.mdf and tempdb.ldf to the drive arrays I want them to go to, even though I have already installed SQL.

Thanks. And sorry ahead of time for the noobiness of the question. I did do a search first, but didnt really see anything that would help me.To change where the data files are located for a given database, just right-click the database and change the Data Files and Transaction Log 'Properties'.

With that said, I don't remember if you can change the data file location for 'system' databases. So you might want to check into that...even so, I wouldn't expect any speed benefit from move the tempdb to a different location.

BTW, good question with some solid background for someone claiming to be noob.

Late,

Alexander|||We use this script for DR to relocate the tempdb to an array large enough to allow it to grow as needed. Change the paths and size to fit your situation, and don't forget to stop and restart the sever after altering the database.

None-Domain server cannot access SQL2005 data on Windows 2003 domain server

I'm trying to run a test from my test environment which is a non-domain Windows 2000 server to access my domain 2003 with SQL2005. I have install 2005 tools to try to access the SQL server.

- I have try following the KB265808 - no success.

- Reading alot of blogs and it seems all are pointing to the same problem. "Remote access" but the settign is enabled.

Error Message:

TITLE: Connect to Server

Cannot connect to ardsqldatawh.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 53)

For help, click: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink?ProdName=Microsoft+SQL+Server&EvtSrc=MSSQLServer&EvtID=53&LinkId=20476

Question: Could Windows 2003 security be blocking access? I'm using sa account to access.

Also, sa account does not seems to work for remote access. It is ok when accessing locally.

Any help would be appreciated.

949jc

Hi 959jc,

Have you configured the Windows firewall on your server machine to allow remote connections? If you're intending to use Named Pipes, then you will need to enable the "File and Print sharing" exception. Also, please take a look at this topic in the BOL for additional info regarding configuring firewalls: http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms175043.aspx.

Another consideration is whether you've restarted your instance after enabling remote protocols.

Otherwise, please provide your connection string and the contents of your error log after you've restarted the service.

Thanks,
Il-Sung.

Node missing component

for some reason the SQL Reporting service didnt get installed on one of my
nodes... so i was simply just going to install it... apparently it isnt so
simple.
how do i go about adding the reporting services to a node?
Thanks
Justin
SQL Reporting Service is not cluster aware. You can install it by running
SQL setup CD and select the Reporting Service option.

|||For SQL 2000, it is a separate CD and install. For SQL 2005, go to
add/remove programs and change SQL 2005. Add the Reporting SErvices

No support for SQL Express or SQL Developer edition running on Virtual PC?

Am I miss-reading something? After spending hours upon hours trying to install VS2005 Beta 2 June CTP edition, I stumbled across some documentation that basically says that SQL Express is *not* supported running on a Virtual PC.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

This is the documentation that I found:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/9/9/5/99599cc4-93ee-4252-85dd-23abff8631b0/RequirementsSQLEXP2005.htm
SQL Express will work fine on Virtual PC.

No Summary page in Management Studio

I have installed SQL Server 2005 sp2. Initialy I didn't install Report Services and Analysis Services. I next installed them using change in Add Remove Programs and still no Summary page. HELP!

I have looked for a solution to this longer than any other software search I have done to no avail.

Try to click F7 on SSMS and if no avail then try to install client tools again.|||

I uninstalled and reinstalled everything and it didn't make any difference.

Still no summary page.

I would love to have it available as it is a development server and the reports on summary page would be very usefull especially.

It works great on our other production servers. This server has the latest service packs on windows server 2003 and SQL Server 2005. SP2 is the latest also not the original one reissued 3/5.

|||

in sp2 the summary page has been renamed... it now Object Explorer Details (i don't have sp2 in my home machine... i am not remembering it exactly... ) .. You click on "View " in Top Menu bar and see the option available there

In SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2, we've renamed the "Summary Page" to "Object Explorer Details". The reports no longer display in this page. They are now launched from the object in Object Explorer and open in their own report window. This allows you to open multiple reports at the same time. Thus, you can compare reports on different instances or the same report multiple times to see what has changed over time.

I gave a webcast on SP2 improvements in this area a little while ago. You should check it out:
