'not a valid Microsoft Tape Format backup set' error when trying to restore DB

Hello
I have a point in time Microsoft SQL Server 2000 .mdf data
file which was taken from a snapshot. Basically, it is the
database at a point in time, which I can attach to and
view data no problem in a sql server.
I also have hourly transaction logs which occured after
the above .mdf data file snapshot. I would like to apply
those transaction log files to the .mdf data file. I've
tried many many varieties, but seem to get farthest with
the following code:
ALTER DATABASE JDE_PRODUCTION SET SINGLE_USER WITH
ROLLBACK IMMEDIATE
GO
RESTORE DATABASE JDE_PRODUCTION
FROM DISK='F:\mssql7\jdedata\jde_PRODUCTIONdata_new.mdf '
WITH NORECOVERY
RESTORE LOG JDE_PRODUCTION
FROM DISK='F:\mssql7\jdedata\07-22-
2004_7.00.00__JDE_PRODUCTION.trb'
WITH NORECOVERY
[...MORE RESTORE HOURLY LOG STATEMENTS...]
RESTORE LOG JDE_PRODUCTION
FROM DISK='F:\mssql7\jdedata\07-22-
2004_13.00.01__JDE_PRODUCTION.trb'
WITH RECOVERY
/****end****/
My problem seems to be the following error:
Server: Msg 3242, Level 16, State 1, Line 2
The file on device 'F:\mssql7
\jdedata\jde_PRODUCTIONdata_new.mdf' is not a valid
Microsoft Tape Format backup set.
Can't seem to get around the fact that Microsoft is
looking for the restore database file as a Tape format,
which it isn't, it's a .mdf database file.
Any clues?
Thanks in advance...
Jeff
You can't RESTORE from an 'mdf' file because a RESTORE command expects a
file created with BACKUP. The backup file will be in MTF format regardless
of the underlying media type.
The proper way to accomplish your task is to start with a full backup.
Hope this helps.

NOSKIP & SKIP make no difference to the amount of time backup take

Hi
I run a full backup once a month and a transaction log backup every 10 mins
through working hours for the remainder of the month until the backup is
re-initialised at th start of the following month.
I backup to virtual sql disk object devices.
As the month progresses the backup takes longer and longer whilst the amount
of data being backed up every 10 minutes cycle is always roughly the same.
its about 5 seconds for a backup on day 1, up to 5 mins at the end of the
month.
I noticed that NOSKIP was being used in the command - i changed this to
SKIP, but it made no difference in the amount of time the backup takes. Isnt
this suppoed to stop some sort of integrity scan on all other backup sets in
the archive?
full syntax of the backup command that runs now is:
BACKUP LOG [objectstore] TO [Backup_objectstore] WITH NOFORMAT , NOINIT ,
NOUNLOAD , NAME = N'objectstore backup', SKIP , REWIND , STATS = 10
but as I say, the SKIP command instead of NOSKIP makes no difference.
whats going on here?
any help appreciated.
Thanks
Alastair.

Noskip/skip does not make any difference on Backup time. It just
checks expiration date of backup sets. I just guess that the reason
may be that your disk gets fragmented after number of backups and that
may cause delay.
|||yes but if theres a LOT of backup sets surely this will add a delay?

|||Looking at the BACKUP commands you posted, which includes REWIND and
NOFORMAT, it looks like the backup goes to tape. When you referred to
"virtual sql disk object devices" I was not expecting that. Tapes are
not virtual disks, tapes are tapes.
I have seen that behavior when backing up directly to tape. The
problem in that case was reading the tape from the start to the point
where the prior backup ended. Lets consider that by the end of the
month there have been around 1000 log backups assuming a 5 day work
week and an 8 hour work day.
I suggest changing the REWIND option to NOREWIND. From the
documentation: "NOREWIND -- Specifies that SQL Server will keep the
tape open after the backup operation. You can use this option to help
improve performance when performing multiple backup operations to a
tape."

|||thanks for your response Roy.
if you go to server objects >backup devices you can configure a virtual
'tape' that is in effect a file on the physical disk. this is what im backing
up to. as far as I can tell the only differnece between using this method and
backing up direct to disk is that you get to use a shorter name in the backup
job command rather than a full file path.
anyhoo
may be this ISNT the only differnce. REWIND is default right? so maybe SQL
is 'rewinding' the virtual tape? ive changed the job to norewind and ill see
what happens in 2 backups time (20 mins.)
cheers for the pointer

I dont have much idea about tapes but in BOL it says that
NOREWIND implies NOUNLOAD, and these options are incompatible within a
single BACKUP statement
and Methodology has specified also NOUNLOAD in the script.
|||fair point - ive taken out NOUNLOAD and changedto NOREWIND as the latter
implies the former

|||NOUNLOAD/UNLOAD and REWIND/NOREWIND are tape-specific commands. If
you are not using tape they should not be in the BACKUP command at
all.
However, I am paranoid when it comes to dealing with backups. I don't
know that anyone has ever confirmed that there are no side effects to
using tape-specific features with a disk backup. So while I would
suggest removing the tape-specific parameters if you are not using
tape, I would combine that with starting a fresh backup file. It
would not hurt to backup to another device or file for the rest of the
month.

Personally I don't think I would set up a backup scheme with one
monthly database backup and log backups every ten minutes. If a
database is active enough to justify a ten-minute interval for the
logs, I would backup the enitre database at least weekly, but more
likely daily. Of course I have no way of knowing your environment and
specific factors that went into the design.

if you go to server objects >backup devices you can configure a virtual
'tape' that is in effect a file on the physical disk. this is what im backing
up to. as far as I can tell the only differnece between using this method and
backing up direct to disk is that you get to use a shorter name in the backup
job command rather than a full file path.
anyhoo
may be this ISNT the only differnce. REWIND is default right? so maybe SQL
is 'rewinding' the virtual tape? ive changed the job to norewind and ill see
what happens in 2 backups time (20 mins.)
cheers for the pointer

you are not using tape they should not be in the BACKUP command at

BACKUP LOG [objectstore] TO [Backup_objectstore] WITH NOFORMAT , N
OINIT ,
NOUNLOAD , NAME = N'objectstore backup', SKIP , REWIND , STATS = 10
but as I say, the SKIP command instead of NOSKIP makes no difference.
whats going on here?
any help appreciated.
Thanks

Noskip/skip does not make any difference on Backup time. It just
checks expiration date of backup sets. I just guess that the reason
may be that your disk gets fragmented after number of backups and that
may cause delay.|||Looking at the BACKUP commands you posted, which includes REWIND and
NOFORMAT, it looks like the backup goes to tape.
You can use this option to help
improve performance when performing multiple backup operations to a
tape."

I dont have much idea about tapes but in BOL it says that
NOREWIND implies NOUNLOAD, and these options are incompatible within a
single BACKUP statement
and Methodology has specified also NOUNLOAD in the script.

Normalizing help and naming conventions

I have an Access Database that I am working on normalizing to SQL Server.
This Access database has been revised multiple times, each time the
programmer (not me!) didn't work to get the existing data to the same level
as the revised program. For instance, the HairColor column has the
following DISTINCT values,
Auburn
Black
Black/Gray
Blonde
Brown
Brown/Gray
Dark Brown
Gray
Gray/Black
Gray/Brown
Lt. Brown
Red
Red-blonde
Red/Blonde
Red/Brown
Now the current revision of the Access database limits the values for the
HairColor column to,
Black
Blonde
Brown
Gray
Red
So I need to make the current values reflect the current dropdown. I know
how to go about this, but have a question about normalizing this database.
Should I create a seperate table, HairColor and then assign ID's to the
HairColor column? What is the benefit of doing it this way, instead of just
leaving the text in there?
Also, if I am to create a new table, how does the naming convention work
with that? Should I prefix my table name with fk_HairColor, or something
like that?
Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks!
drewI would create a table named HairColor with the columns:
HairColorID int
HairColor varchar (20)
In any table that references this table, you can create a foreign key. You
will take up less space in your DB overall. Also, consider what would
happen if you decided to change "Lt. Brown" to "Light Brown". With the
normalized version, you change it in only one place.

drew|||Thanks for the response... I thought it was better to replace it with a FK,
but am trying to convince my boss the same...
So you don't use a different naming convention with FKs? I just have about
30 tables on this database and it is getting harder to read for each FK
table I include...

a Persons table, and each person has a hair colour. Here's how the Persons

Thanks for the response... I thought it was better to replace it with a FK,
but am trying to convince my boss the same...
So you don't use a different naming convention with FKs? I just have about
30 tables on this database and it is getting harder to read for each FK
table I include...

HairColor column? What is the benefit of doing it this way, instead of
just
leaving the text in there? <<
Let's start with basics:
1) Do your research! Is there an industry standard code for hair
colors? Use it
2) If not, then design an encoding that has a missing and/or misc code
value -- Hey, I am bald!
3) If you expect the values to change, the list to be long, or that you
willneed to add other information later, then put the encoding into a
separate table.
4) If you expect the values to be static, the list to be short or that
you will not need to add other information later, then put the encoding
into a CHECK() constraint. For example, the ISO sex codes are going to
stay the same for awhile, as are the two-letter state codes.
Get a copy of SQL PROGRAMMING STYLE. You never, never prefix a data
element name with thigns to tell you (1) Where it is used -- so no
table names (2) how it is used -- so no pk- or fk- crap (3) how it is
store, so no data types. Follow ISO-11179 rules and name a thing for
what it is, independent of its location or usage.
Do not blindly design an encoding as a numbered list. Think about
hierarchical ("Dewey Decimal") codes, abbreviation codes, etc. That
is also in SQL PROGRAMMING STYLE.|||I second getting SQL Programming Style. I read it in 2 ws. It is
any easy read.|||For the record, I was agreeing with you!

Non-sync initialization

Dear friends
I read about 'NoSync' initialization.I tried out in my system. That time after executing Sp_Scriptpublicationcustomprocs,Stored procedures are propagated to subscriber.Replication was working fine. But afterwards I got some problem. So I reinstall my SQL Server I agin tried 'NoSync' initialization. This time Stored procedure is getting created on Publisher database not in subscriber. Can you tell me what may be the reason

I have two other doubts also
1)Sometimes I am getting error in subscriber.'The process couldn't connect to Distributor'.How to configure distributor in this case?
in configure publishing, distributor wizard I won't able to do anything like that change distributor login or something

2)How to delete Distributor database from a server.once it's get created if wan't also I won't able to delete it

3)If I am using SQL Server 2005 Peer to peer Replication whether it will be reliable for load balancing. My All servers will be in one office only.Or clustering may be better technology for load balancing.if it is like that can you tell me why it is?

Expecting reply
Filson

If it worked for you the first time, it should work for you the second time If you received an error, you have to tell us otherwise we won't know where to start.

Regarding "the process could not connect to Distributor" msg, you say "sometimes", or do you mean "all the time"? If it's sometimes, then you need to check your network connection or domain security. All replication does is try to make a connection, if it can't, it will fail.

If you want to remove replication, follow the steps in Books Online for remove replication. If you get into a state where you can't get out of, try running "sp_removedbreplication".

Peer to Peer is an excellent solution for load balancing, it's one of several. there are many docs on the net describing pros and cons of each.

Hello,

My users often view some report for some minutes and after that want to return to parent report.
If they did it after small time (~less than minute), everything is OK. But if this pause is above 1 minute they receive "Runtime Error" message and can only to go to homepage.

I think that this is some session time or something like that.

I had two things that was giving me the same problem one was a Ajax update panel around it and the other was because of the bad release of VS2005 SP1. The "Microsoft.ReportViewer.* assemblies" where messing it up so I had to un-install them from my GAC and find the older "File version"

Non-additive measures

We need to support non-additive measures in our cube, such as rates. The rates will be averaged across time by using a custom formula (weighted average). The rate measures cannot be aggregated by any other dimension. However, when the end user browses by the Account dimension (each member in the Account dimension relates to exactly one record in the fact table), the user must be able to see the rates.

I set the average function of the rates measures to None. How can I surface the rate measures from the measure leaves to the Account dimension leaves?

What is the granularity of rates in the fact table ? If they are entered, for example, per Account and Time - you should create new measure group at that granularity.|||

Hi, Mosha. I appologize for not making this clearer. The measure group is already created. The lowest grain is the Account dimension. The measure group intersect with other dimensions too, including Time. Besides non-additive measures, the measure group has additive and semi-additive measures.

If the aggregate function of a measure is None, is it possible to show up that measure at the Account level so I can apply the custom aggregation formula across time to get:

Jan Feb Mar Apr .... Total

Acct A 0.45 0.5 0.6 0.4 = (0.45 * 31 + 0.5 * 28 + 0.6 * 31 + 0.4 * 30 + ...) / Total days for selected months

Acct B 0.30 0.35 0.75 0.8 = <same custom formula>

Again, an Account member has no more than one corresponding record in the measure group always.

|||What I suggested was to leave all other (additive) measures in the measure group that you already created. Based on your example, the granularity of Rates is at least Account and Time (but possibly other attributes). You need to create NEW measure group and include just these two dimensions (unless rates vary by other dimensions as well). You didn't specify how the rates should aggregate across accounts, but probably they don't at all.|||

Thanks Mosha. I prefer to leave the rates in the same measure group for usability reasons and I think I have a workaround by setting the Account All member to NULL and the measure aggregate function to SUM.

Let me ask a more general question. If I have an aggregate function of None, is it possible to bring up the measure leaves to the dimension leaves? I haven't been successful doing so. At the same time, this is what BOL states for the None aggregate function:

"No aggregation is performed, and all values for leaf and nonleaf members in a dimension are supplied directly from the fact table for the measure group that contains the measure."

Why I don't see the non-additive measure values when browsing at the Account leaves then?

|||

I prefer to leave the rates in the same measure group for usability reasons

What are these usability reasons ? By artificially forcing deeper grain on the rates you make your model less natural and it is harder to work with. Why are you so resistant to set correct grain for you rate measures ?

If I have an aggregate function of None, is it possible to bring up the measure leaves to the dimension leaves?

I think you misunderstand the notion of "measure group leaves" and "dimension leaves". Perhaps the following blog will be of help: http://www.sqljunkies.com/WebLog/mosha/archive/2006/04/29/leaves.aspx

Anyway, if you were to follow my advice about creating measure group with Account and Time, and set custom formula to aggregate Time as Average - you wouldn't have had this issue.

|||

What are these usability reasons ? Why are you so resistant to set correct grain for you rate measures ?

B/c the semi-additive and additive measures will be organized in display folders under one measure group while the rates will be under another. If you are building off-the-shelf solution, things like these matter especially when your end users haven't heard about OLAP. Besides, I need to worry now about partitioning and processing a separate measure group.

I think you misunderstand the notion of "measure group leaves" and "dimension leaves". Perhaps the following blog will be of help: http://www.sqljunkies.com/WebLog/mosha/archive/2006/04/29/leaves.aspx

I've read the article (thanks for sharing) and anything written on this subject but I couldn't find answers to the questions "what happens when the aggregate function is set to None, where is the data stored, and how the heck I can get to it" (hint, hint :-).

Anyway, if you were to follow my advice about creating measure group with Account and Time, and set custom formula to aggregate Time as Average - you wouldn't have had this issue.

It is a good advice and I can see the simplifications it brings. However, setting the aggregate function to Average won't help anyway since I need a weighted average calculation over time. Hence, I still need to overwrite the total over time.

NON EMPTY

Hello
I have an MDX statement that looks like this:
SELECT
{ Measures.members } on Columns ,
{ CrossJoin( [Time].[Calendar].[2004].[May]:[Time].
[Calendar].[2004].[July],[Business].[User].[Business
Entity Id].[212].Children ) } on Rows
FROM UsageStats
And it returns this via a matrix report:
2004
|--|--|--|--|
| May | June | July |Total |
--|--|--|--|--|
Alan Smith | 2 | 3 | 2 | 7 |
Amy Marcus | | 3 | 3 | 6 |
Bob Fields | | | | |
Carry Grant | 1 | | | 1 |
--|--|--|--|--|
TOTAL | 3 | 6 | 5 | 14 |
--|--|--|--|--|
The report above represents hits to a website on a per-
Monthly basis for each user.
I would like to supress the empty rows so that Bob Fields,
above, won't show up at all. I tried using
NonEmptyCrossJoin like this:
SELECT
{ Measures.members } on Columns ,
{ NonEmptyCrossJoin( [Time].[Calendar].[2004].[May]:
[Time].[Calendar].[2004].[July],[Business].[User].
[Business Entity Id].[212].Children ) } on Rows
FROM UsageStats
and just NON EMPTY like this:
SELECT
{ Measures.members } on Columns ,
{ NonEmptyCrossJoin( [Time].[Calendar].[2004].[May]:
[Time].[Calendar].[2004].[July],[Business].[User].
[Business Entity Id].[212].Children ) } on Rows
FROM UsageStats
Both methods above supress the empty rows, but they also
supress anyone who hasn't had any hits to the site in the
first month, even if they do have hits in the 2nd or 3rd
months (so both Bob Fields, and Amy Marcus are both left
out of the report above).
Does anyone know how to possibly get around this? Any help
at all will be greatly appreciated!!! :D
Best regards
JanoYou might be able to use FILTER in conjunction with the CoalesceEmpty to
meet your need:
Example of CoalesceEmpty against Foodmart 2000 Sales cube to set
Measures.[Store Sales] to 0 for any Quarter that is empty:
=====================================================================WITH
MEMBER [Measures].[NonEmpty Sales] AS
'CoalesceEmpty(Measures.[Store Sales], 0)'
SELECT
CROSSJOIN( {[Time].[1997].children}, { [Measures].[NonEmpty
Sales] } )
ON COLUMNS,
CROSSJOIN( { [Store].[Store City].members }, {[Product].[Product
Department].members} )
ON ROWS
FROM Sales
=====================================================================
Now we add FILTER statement to remove any stores that did not have sales in
all Quarters:
=====================================================================WITH
MEMBER [Measures].[NonEmpty Sales] AS
'CoalesceEmpty(Measures.[Store Sales], 0)'
SELECT
CROSSJOIN( {[Time].[1997].children}, { [Measures].[NonEmpty
Sales] } )
ON COLUMNS,
FILTER(
CROSSJOIN( { [Store].[Store City].members }, {[Product].[Product
Department].members} ),
([Store].CurrentMember,
[Product].CurrentMember, [Measures].[NonEmpty Sales]) > 0 )
ON ROWS
FROM Sales
